My Unforgettable Experience at the Metropolitan Museum of Art

When I was in the CUNY Language Immersion Program I had the opportunity to visit some museums in New York City. One of them was the Metropolitan Museum of Art located at 1000 Fifth Ave New York, NY. The Metropolitan is a very huge museum that has collected arts from all over the world (The Met). It has a big variety of exhibition for all type of visitors (The Met). It is a museum that satisfies everyone’s expectations. The entire family can go there because it has something special and educative for everyone (The Met). It was the first museum that totally caught my attention since I did not like museum so much. That evening I spent in The Met was full of different kind of emotions.

As a student, my mission there was to pretend that I was traveling around the world in 90 minutes. Indeed, I really felt like a person who has an international visa and can travel around the world. I went from country to country in each continent, however I could not travel as much as I wanted because the time was not enough. My classmate and I ran excitedly from one gallery to the other one, trying to learn about the different art each country or continent has, and everything we saw was amazing. I wanted to spend more time staring at the sculptures, decorations and other interesting artifacts that can be find in The Met.  

Most of the things I saw were weird. Thus, they were interesting and made me feel curious. I found that everything there has a unique message, and I could feel inside myself the mystery behind of most of them. Besides following the meaning of the artworks, it was the first time I have seen so many treasures in just one place. I wished I could have some of them to become rich. I saw many things made with gold, emeralds and diamonds. Moreover, there were some paintings in the second floor that I could connect to myself because they reminded me of my beautiful countryside in the Dominican Republic. There were about mountains, flowers, rivers and birds. Contemplating those paintings about nature made me feel so relaxed.    

I used to think that museums were boring, but the Metropolitan Museum changed my mind about that. Whenever I visit a museum, I find the special mission of them. The experience I had at the Metropolitan Museum will stay with me forever because it was the first museum that made me feel like a little child who just wanted to have fun. I was so happy, excited, curious, and impressed by the wonderful things in the Metropolitan Museum.

Subway Music Vibrations

          I’ve been a subway rider for most of my life and it recently occurred to me that I would never be so intimately familiar with the pan flute or the steel drum if it weren’t for the time I spend underground. Musicians don’t need a permit to perform legally in the subway. All for what seems like a tough gig, challenging, even exotic music to a bunch of frazzled, distracted and occasionally drunk passers-by. So why do it? For the money? The random shot at fame?       

        What you’ll see isn’t just limited to musicians either, with acrobats, break-dancers and poets can also regularly spotted all around the New York Subway system.  If you notice that some of the subway performers are more accomplished than others, that’s because anyone is allowed to busk in New York’s subways stations, if they follow a few simple rules. 

          In order to pump out amplified sound you need an official NYC Street Performing License or Permit, which costs around $45. There’s also no performing allowed on subway cars, and nobody is allowed to sell CD’s or other merchandise.  Spend a few minutes on the subway though and you’ll see every one of these rules being broken, because hey it’s New York. Did you know that jaywalking and unnecessarily honking your car horn in New York are also illegal? Watch as closely as you like, and you’ll never see anyone getting fined for either of those two offenses.

Should Sugary Drinks Consumptions Be Reduced and Taxed?

I would like to research in that topic because Sugar have been one of the principal products more demanded in the market. Sugar consumptions in New York City become a big problem in our society. I think that Sugar is a big problem in this city because it opens the door of different diseases. I think that when the government increases the taxes of a product people tent to reduce or refuse to buy it. Lest make a simple example: when you goes to a grocery or market compare the price of a soda & water. There is a big difference between them. I think that this topic is interesting to discuss.

Is "broken windows" policing effective?

As my topic I would like to research about the broken windows policing . Which introduce a safe and clean neighborhood program. This program had a purposed of reduce crime rates and increasing the security in selected neighborhood. I would like to explore if this program offers enough safety, order and a better relationship between the citizens and the authority. In this way we will determine if it is effective enough to maintain the safety between our neighborhoods in New York City.

New York a Diversity Of Art and Music

New York is best known for the diversity of cultures. Which the majority have contributed to various factors, including music and art. Today music is part of each one of us. Often in New York City, as I take the train, I realize how people are wearing headphones while others play music on speaker. Music is something that can not be touch but it is an art that touches us. Art exists in all corners of New York City.

Is a fascinating experience as a city with so many cultures can build a calendar with space for each of them. New York is a city where diversity is celebrated. Each year countries from the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico to Ecuador receive 2 or 3 days designated to celebrate their own heritage. A parade happens a designated day in which each country celebrate it culture with music, colors, flags and costumes. According to Jeffrey from the New York Times The Dominican heritage it’s celebrate in Manhattan from 36th to 52th Street with a lot of people waving red, blue and white flags, dancing music such as bachata, merengue and hip hop. In each parade that I have visited I have been able to appreciate different cultural values ​​such as art by producing the clothes, jewelry and the different genres of music that each culture presents. In the Dominican parade flag’s colored clothes and costumes from the carnival can be appreciated.

In this year I had the opportunity to visit the Dominican stop for the first time. I call her a little piece of my country. I could appreciate the kind of music that are almost extinct, because the teenagers genres. From my ancestors I came to say that the kind of music that the Dominican parade has (bachata and merengue) are the best compare to the new genres because it have a story to tell. Since nowadays the new genres of hip hop do not have to much to tell we can say that some cultural values ​​have been lost.

According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 16 million Americans are living with a disease caused by smoking. This alarming situation has captured my attention allowing me to discuss the three most important causes of Smoking Diseases such as lung cancer, stroke, and emphysema. As a way to raise awareness about how dangerous is the smoking cigarette.

Why is it important to place your child in a Daycare before PreK 4?

New York City Mayor De Blasio, is very passionate about early education. For my research paper I will inform you on the importance of placing your child in a reputable Daycare before they start school at 4 years old. I will speak from first hand experience with my daughter as well as provide factual proof that placing your child in a structured setting before school will give them the upper hand in the classroom.
