Grocery shopping vs. eating out

“Food has replaced music at the heart of the cultural conversation,” (Dornbusch) Somehow the focus of culture has drifted towards food and the experience one gets from the act itself.  Today people commonly refer to themselves as being a foodie, a person with a particular interest in food; a gourmet. With a new focus towards food, one can weigh the costs of eating out vs. cooking at home and which of the two are cheaper.
Dornbusch, a writer for the Boston Globe  focuses on the percentage of people that eat out vs the more traditional cooking at home method due to cost. She references a study that was done on the costs of eating out, it being cheaper by nearly $2 or $3 dollars than cooking at home. To test this absurd theory in her eyes, she goes out to eat and then replicates the meal at home herself.  The costs are very close as far as grocery shopping goes but with left overs being taken into account, cooking at home resulted in being much cheaper. Cooking for one person and having a plethora of leftovers truly stretches the dollar past one meal being ordered on seamless.
With a clear difference in cost, choosing to eat at home and save money in the bank would appear to be the most logical answer. Yet as of today groceries eaten at home have continued to fall. “ As the industry publication Nation’s Restaurant News recently pointed out, federal data shows that average prices for food eaten at home in January actually fell 0.5% year over year.” (Tuttle). With increasing percentages of people eating out and not grocery shopping, it appears that the cause for eating out must stem from another root. As Dornbusch mentioned the culture of food has taken a direction towards food. As culture changes so does the way people eat.

---“Generations of Americans who gathered around a kitchen table for home-cooked meals would be puzzled by the way we eat today: As of last year, we now spend more on food at restaurants than we do on supermarket groceries—a reversal of a decades-old pattern.”--- I'm still up in the air if this quote will help my article.

Troubles in the South

From the early years of the twentieth century going into the middle age almost every African American family in the South where most African Americans reside, have a decision to make. Black farmers want to leave the plantations and work in better environments, those with skills want to work in more professional settings without being discriminated and others like yard boys were scared of making minor gestures at planters wife that could get them killed or hung on trees. Considering the fact that they were locked in these conditions almost each family had to make a decision either to migrate to the North or stay in the South.

About 89% of African Americans live in the south before The Great Migration but by 1970, this was true of only 53% of the African American population.  “The great Migration”, symbolizes the largest movement of any race in American history.  In “The Warmth of Other Suns”, Isabel Wilkerson’s chronicle of this crucial event mentioned, “It was during the First World War that a silent pilgrimage took its first steps within the border of this country. The fever rose without warning or notice or much in the way of understanding by those outside its reach. It would not end until the 1970s and would set into motion changes in the North and South that no one, not even the people doing the leaving, could have imagined at the start of it or dreamed would take nearly a lifetime to play out...”  Most of these migrants migrated to seek freedom and a better economic status. The south was a hostile environment for African Americans especially during the Jim Crow era. In 1868, following ratification of the 14th and 15th amendments, which granted full citizenship to emancipated slaves, African-Americans achieved a number of elected positions in newly established regional governments in the South.  However, after the withdrawal of Union troops from the South in 1876, a series of local and state laws, commonly known as Jim Crow laws, legalized segregation and political disenfranchisement for African-Americans.  Often this legal oppression was augmented by violence and intimidation from groups opposed to African-American equality. This is one of the main reasons that caused The Great Migration; this is because they felt unsafe in the South and the segregation has also caused unfair treatments in the work industry. The situation in the South has gone beyond discrimination and segregation, there was physical violence. During this time African American were lynched for things that are not considered crimes today. For example an African American can be if a white person accused him if acting impertinent.

To further explain my point in the article Violence and Economic Mobility in the Jim Crow South, Jamelle Bouie mentioned “….not only could you be killed for transgressing the nebulous and arbitrary social requirements of the Jim Crow, but you could also be killed for starting a business, accumulating wealth and otherwise trying to improve your situation. The economic resources in the south were limited and the civil had played a part in that. There was a major decline in investments in the region and most of them did not get the lands they thought will be granted to them. This has force them to work as sharecroppers for the white landowners. The white landowners were taking advantage of them and forcing them to sign contracts that will put them into debt through the use of violence threats.

Health problems related with sugary drinks and possibles solutions

On the other hand, Michael Bloomberg proposed to tax cigarette in New York. According to the passage, “Cigarette Tax Increased to Keep the States Running” by Nicholas Confessore New York decided to tax cigarette because they wanted people to control the bad smoking habits that they had. (1) In addition, Confessor believes that by taxing cigarette, New York states could make more money to benefit “Health Care Program”, “Tobacco Cessation Program”, and Cancer Research Center in Buffalo, and some people could quit smoke. (2)
Moreover, in the passage “ A New Low for Cigarette Smoking” Nicholas Bakalar states that after the government imposed tax on cigarette, the percent of smokers was reduced from a 21 percent to 15 percent. Bakalar says that in 2005, “45.1 million people smoked in the country, but by 2015 36.5 million people smoked”. (1) In addition, Bakalar states that this reduction happened because of the tax strategy that the government used because the percent of smokers reduced significantly. (2)
Therefore, experts believe that one of the best solutions to control the consumption of sugary drinks is imposing tax on it. According to the passage, “W.H.O Urges Tax on Sugary Drinks to Fight Obesity” by Sabrina Tavernise taxing sugary drinks such as soda, fruit drinks, and energy drinks would reduce the consumption of it, and therefore it would reduce obesity, diabetes, and tooth decay. Tavernise believe that by taxing sugary drinks would also provide more benefits for the country. (A11)
Over many years, sugary drinks have been one of the major influences in causing obesity. Obesity has increased significantly over the past decade because of sugary drinks (Tish Margaret). (15) According to the journal “Obesity Childhood”, obesity is caused by consuming more calories than your body need. Therefore, sugary drinks are causing children to be overweight because the sugary drinks are high in calories, and the consumption of the sugary drinks among children are higher than the level of calories that they need per day. In addition, the consumption of healthy products such as milk and water are lower than the level of sugary drinks consumption. (17) The American Heart Association suggests that the consumption of fruits and vegetables are healthy for our bodies, and to contrast the obesity, but not in sugary drinks. Therefore, sugary drinks fruit should be reduce. (21)

SENATOR TOM HARKINS

Tom Richard Harkin born in Cumming Iowa in November 19, 1939, is an American politician, attorney and author who served as a United States Senator from Iowa from 1985 to 2015. Senator Tom Harkin represents the state of Iowa and see how his brother, Frank, lost his ability to hear at very young age. Senator Harkin saw how low expectations, lack of accessibility, and discrimination restricted his brother participation in activities that most American’s take for granted. Because of that he introduced the Keeping All Students Safe Act. This act was one of the most important actions that open a door to children’s with disabilities, with physical and sensory disabilities to have the right and benefit with education receiving free and appropriate public education that is guaranteed in our nation’s Constitution.

Senator Harkin want to create more opportunities to ensure a higher expectation and education for students with disabilities to receive more access and participation in their schools, having a daily routines to exclude barred from living and working in their locals communities. The United Stated before don’t give this accommodations to children with disabilities to go to school, but today it is different to this children’s with disabilities they have access to many programs offered from the government like IDEA (Individuals with Disabilities Education Act), IEP (Individualized Educational Program) and IFSP (Individualized Family Service Plan) to improve in this children’s develop and have more ability to face life.

That why in order to see our children’s with disabilities advance, we have to put more effort into our educational system, that ours schools see the this interventions helps in a positive way in the learning and the environment of this children are important. Because many schools don’t offers this programs to this children, but they receives the funds from the government. This is why we need to include this children’s in the system, because I see many children with disabilities are neglected and discriminated for other children’s in schools because of the lack of awareness for the little explanation that parents and teachers give to their children. That’s why we have to do the best for our children’s with disabilities and non-disabilities, to make our country function better and this children life better.

The Chinese Manufacturing Market

The Chinese manufacturing environment is cheap thus beat the skyrocketing pricing in the US. It explains why many American firms are moving out for production instead of working from within. In the last decades, the Chinese products were seen and thought of being low quality, but the tendency and quality are improving. The future economic giants are locating markets for their products in Africa, Asia, and Latin America. Many of the Chinese products find their way into the American soil, and people are positive about them. The wages in China has increased in the recent past, but the price of production remains small compared to the home country. The Japanese products, especially vehicles and machinery, outpace the US models on quality and prices. Those products from China are 5 percent cheaper than those manufactured in the US, and such difference is making an influence in the firms' decision to relocate. Factoring in the fewer regulations and fewer tariffs the shipping is not turning to be a problem. According to the Massachusetts and Cornell universities, India is responsible for over 700,000 outsourced jobs in the country.
The long-term negative impact of outsourcing has not been known towards the economy. On a short note, the companies are reaping more from the foreign lands and are becoming richer throughout the outsourcing. The consumers are happy to have cheap toys and products that ensure that they save more from their earnings. Though it will not last for long, the citizens are enjoying the free trade and associations allowing North American items to sell in the American soils thus allowing for competition and low-quality products. According to economists, the loss of the jobs will make the American poor and unable even to purchase the cheaper toys at the market.

A morphed policy

The criminal justice system brought up new ideas with broken windows theory. With the past of the years many people think that the policy need to be fix or reformed. Rosen express that “Zero tolerance focuses on discovering (not deterring) crime by mandating that police stop, frisk and arrest vast numbers of people--many of whom are young black and Hispanic men--for minor offenses, in the hope that subway turnstile jumpers and pot smokers will turn out to be guilty of more serious offenses.” After the mayor Guiliani won the election presenting the Zero Tolerance program the crime rates didn't have a notable decrease. Some of the policemen working with this policy didn’t find it appropriate in most cases. This policy was not only a like to the Broken Windows theory but more aggressive.
Both theories became more controversial when two unarmed men were shots to dead by the New York police department. Giuliani felt like his morphed theory were more successful than the original but there were terrible changes in how they handle vandalism and drug dealers. Applying the Broken Windows theory a drug dealer or a smoker were more likely to receive a warning while applying the zero tolerance they were handcuff right away. Residents after seeing what has become of the criminal justice system began to step down as before, being in silence(Rosen). All this because they thought people that were vandals or smokers in the streets didn’t deserve to be shot by mistake for refusing to get handcuff once they got caught by the police. Policing has become a chaos between how to make America safe and at the same time make people trust in the authorities.
Penalties for serious crimes were usually mistaken applied to minor offences by the police departments after they brought this policies. McMaken express, “It's important to note, though, that the vision of Kelling and Wilson was not the crude model of policing that is used today under the label or the Broken Windows theory. (What is used today is often a hybrid of the Broken Windows model and the "zero-tolerance" model.). Today’s policing have been morphed into a more productively theory by taking what works from each and merging it into one. In the actuality New York City is presenting “Broken windows warrants. The mayor de Blasio and the New York Police signed off a new plan that would apply to warrant only from 10 years or older. (Gartland, Moore and Cohen) This warrants that seek arrest for minor offenses will mostly affect the people who didn’t went to the court after getting a summon. De blasio a like Kelling and Wilson believes that by taking this step he could help drop the crimes rates of New York city and clean the streets of old ruler breakers.

One of the Designer of Central Park

American Landscape Architect Frederick Law Olmsted who designed a succession of outstanding public parks, beginning with Central Park. He was Born at Hartford, connecticut on April 26, 1822. His mother died when he was almost four years old. His father remarried at 1827 He design many park and one of them was Central Park also called "The Big Apple" In Manhattan, New York City. He left his home when he was seven years old, because he was tutored by and board with a series of ministers. As he was about to enter Yale College in 1837,  he got sumac poisoning when he was fourteen years old, and the infection weakened his eyes and kept him from the usual course of studies. This affecting his study and he couldn't continue on to university.

He spent the twenty years gathering experiences and skills from a variety of endeavors that he eventually utilized in creating the profession of landscape architecture. He worked In New York dry-goods store and took a year-long voyage in the china trade. He studied surveying and engineering, chemistry, and scientific farming and ran a farm on Staten Island from 1848 to 1855. Olmsted published his first book in 1852 Walks and Talks of an American Farmer in England.

On June 13, 1859, Olmsted Married Mary Cleveland (Perkins) Olmsted.  He adopted her three children (his nephews and niece), John Charles Olmsted, Charlotte Olmsted (Bryant) and Owen Olmsted. Frederick and Mary had two children together who survived infancy: a daughter, Marion (born October 28,1861), and a son Frederick Law Olmsted Jr. Their first child, John Theodore Olmsted was born on June 13, 1860, and died in Infant

Between 1856 and 1860 he publish three volumes of travel account and social analysis of the south. As I read during his career Olmsted firm carried out more than 500 commissions. They included 100 public parks and recreation grounds, 200 private states, 50 residential communities and subdivision and campus design for 40 academic institutions. Olmsted was a prolific author, despite the difficulty he experienced in expressing his ideas in writing. Six thousand letters and reports that he wrote during his landscape architecture career have survived, dealing with 300 design commissions.

He believed that it was the purpose of his art to affect the emotions. This was especially evident in his park design, Where he created passages of scenery in which the visitor would become immersed, experiencing the restorative action of the landscape by what Olmsted termed an "Unconscious" process. He died in Belmont, MA on August 28, 1903.
