General information about choosing a topic
Once you have chosen a topic for your research paper, and it has been approved by me, it will be posted here.

Your research topic must have some connection to New York City.

You can write an expository essay (a simple description of your findings) or a persuasive essay (an attempt to prove one's opinion is correct). The way your research question is posed is a clue to which kind of essay you will right. If the question focuses on facts—Who built Central Park?—the result will be an expository essay. If, on the other hand, the question asks for an opinion—Is "broken windows" policing effective?—you will be writing a persuasive essay.

Here are some possibilities for research topics:

The history of a famous building, structure, or park in the city:
Who built Central Park?
How was the Brooklyn Bridge built?
What is the history of Governor's Island and the structures that were built there?

Social history:
How has Latino culture changed in New York over the last thirty years?
Why are there so few manufacturing jobs in New York City today?
How did the Great Migration (the movement of rural African-Americans from the South to the manufacturing cities of the North in the early 20th century) change New York City?
What was Harlem like during the Harlem Renaissance?

A question about a famous New Yorker:
How did JayZ become established as a rapper?
Who is Afrika Bambaataa?
How did Fiorello LaGuardia shape modern New York?

An examination of a social issue:
Is "broken windows" policing effective?
How do environmental factors affect health in the South Bronx?
Why is Mayor deBlasio promoting free pre-K schooling?
Are charter schools better than traditional public schools?
Are the police and fire departments hiring enough people of color?

Lifestyle questions:
Is gentrification destroying neighborhoods?
How has Hip-Hop been expressed through fashion—the clothes people wear?
What is parkour, and where is it practiced in New York?

As you can see from this short list, there are plenty of topics out there. You could choose one of the topics above, or devise your own.
