SENATOR TOM HARKINS

Tom Richard Harkin born in Cumming Iowa in November 19, 1939, is an American politician, attorney and author who served as a United States Senator from Iowa from 1985 to 2015. Senator Tom Harkin represents the state of Iowa and see how his brother, Frank, lost his ability to hear at very young age. Senator Harkin saw how low expectations, lack of accessibility, and discrimination restricted his brother participation in activities that most American’s take for granted. Because of that he introduced the Keeping All Students Safe Act. This act was one of the most important actions that open a door to children’s with disabilities, with physical and sensory disabilities to have the right and benefit with education receiving free and appropriate public education that is guaranteed in our nation’s Constitution.

Senator Harkin want to create more opportunities to ensure a higher expectation and education for students with disabilities to receive more access and participation in their schools, having a daily routines to exclude barred from living and working in their locals communities. The United Stated before don’t give this accommodations to children with disabilities to go to school, but today it is different to this children’s with disabilities they have access to many programs offered from the government like IDEA (Individuals with Disabilities Education Act), IEP (Individualized Educational Program) and IFSP (Individualized Family Service Plan) to improve in this children’s develop and have more ability to face life.

That why in order to see our children’s with disabilities advance, we have to put more effort into our educational system, that ours schools see the this interventions helps in a positive way in the learning and the environment of this children are important. Because many schools don’t offers this programs to this children, but they receives the funds from the government. This is why we need to include this children’s in the system, because I see many children with disabilities are neglected and discriminated for other children’s in schools because of the lack of awareness for the little explanation that parents and teachers give to their children. That’s why we have to do the best for our children’s with disabilities and non-disabilities, to make our country function better and this children life better.
