Fox News compares 9/11 memorial to Confederate monuments

On the 16th year anniversary of 9/11 a Fox New’s anchor Brian Kilmeade conducted an interview with Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke, questioning whether he thought the 9/11 memorials will face the same fate as Confederate monuments 100 years from now.  In the interview Zinke, stated “I am one that believes we should learn from history and I think our monuments are part of our counties history”.

Many of the Confederate monuments were constructed in the early 1900’s, during a period of racial violence. The Confederate statues were made to commemorate the Civil War, there are some sentiments that they may commemorate that Confederacy stood for which was to secede from the north to continue enslavement of thousands. 9/11 memorials were made to remember American victims from whom were killed by a foreign terrorist group. I don’t think the 9/11 memorial would be perceived as glorifying what happened to 9/11. Zinke continued to say “We can learn from it. Since we don’t put up statues of Jesus, everyone is going to fall morally short. And I think reflecting on our history both good and bad, is powerful statement and part of our DNA…” I agree with him in some to an extent. I think it is very important for us to know our history good and bad allowing us to grow and learn but I feel mentally knowing about our history gives us the options to confront it or put it in the back of my head. Walking past a monument that holds horrible memories of hate does not compare to the feelings mourners feel when they walk past the 9/11 memorial.

The 9/11 memorial was created in memory of thousands of  brave, innocent, Americans that were killed by foreign terrorist that shared similar views as the men that are placed on pedestals in Americas most powerful city. Both the 9/11 terrorist and Confederates view people unlike themselves as inferior. The 9/11 memorial and the Confederate statues will never be compared nor have any link to each other, other than the victims that suffered and died were killed by cowards. I find it very insulting that the 9/11 memorial and the Confederate status were used in the same context. I applauded Hillary Clinton's spokesman Jesse Ferguson, for demanding that FOX apologizes to the families of flight 93 for comparing their bravery to confederate generals who fought against our nation.
