"Heroic student killed during school shooting tried to stop gunman"

 

On Wednesday September 13, 2017, a Washington State student was killed by a fellow schoolmate while trying to stop him. According to Spokane County Sheriff Ozzie Knezovich it is said that the killer had two guns but one jammed as the male victim intervened and lost his life in the process. The student went to the school armed and began to take his weapons out. In attempt to fire one weapon it jammed. He then proceeded to take out the second weapon that is when the victim walked up to him in attempt to stop him, and resulted in him being fatally shot. Had the victim not attempted to intervene, along with the help of a very brave staff member containing the gunman until the deputies arrived, the death toll could have been much greater.

 

I find it to be very sad and disturbing that at a place in which you should feel safest attending, has in recent years become a place at risk of being dangerous. Some people are against installing metal detectors in schools for many reason, either invasion of privacy or something as simple as feeling as if you are in jail. What some fail to realize is that this unfortunately is the word in which we live in. It is better to be safe than sorry. 

 

 Although I agree with our second amendment rights to bear arms, I feel there has to be more gun regulations set in place. People should go through a screening process to determine if they have mental illness and if they are responsible enough to carry guns. I also feel that children these days have way too much access to guns and parents should be more responsible in how and where they keep their guns. I believe parents these days are unaware or not in tune with their children's behaviors. In my opinion most shootings like these that take place could easily be avoided if people educate themselves on mental illness and the signs in which they begin. It is very unfortunate that so many lose their lives yearly due to senseless acts of violence.
