New York City is full of many different cultures, but mainly
the American culture. Being from Gambia,
moving to New York City was a huge change from where I came from. As stated by
Jacqui Murray “Every nation is unique. Their cultures, people, are perfect for
their country, but often odd to the rest of the world”. I noticed how people interact with each other. I
remember trying to get directions to a particular area and found it a little
difficult to have someone stop and actually help me. Everyone seemed to be in a rush to get
somewhere which was different from what I was used to. Back in Gambia, everyone moves at a slower
and calmer pace. People are always open
for conversation, so asking for directions would not be a problem.
I remember my first night in New York City. My aunt locked all of the locks that were on
her apartment door. This was new to me
as well. I was used to a life where you
could keep your doors open, allowing neighbors to come by when they wanted to
visit. I then realized that the culture here
is a little more private in their personal spaces, friends and family call
before stopping by and knock on the door before they enter.
While living in New York City I noticed that Americans were
more outspoken about what they believed in.
I witnessed parades, protests and sometimes an occasional argument about
various topics and concerns. This really
fascinated me because it let me know that I have a voice and an opinion that
mattered. It also let me know that I
would not be the only one with that opinion.
I have also noticed that Americans are very hard working. The hours are long and the reward may not be
as big. I have witnessed this first hand
when I got a job working in New York City.
While the work may be extensive at times I have noticed the skills you
develop can take you far.
New York City is full of many different cultures. The one that stood out to me when I arrived
here from Gambia was the American culture.
I have learned a lot while living here and I have definitely changed as
a person as well.
