Possible Hazing Suspected in L.S.U. Student's Death

Possible Hazing Suspected in L.S.U. Student’s Death

Hazing is the imposition of strenuous, often humiliating tasks as part of a program of rigorous physical training and initiation. Hazing often happens at schools that have fraternities and is a way to show your gratitude to that fraternity before becoming a member. 18 year old Maxwell Raymond Gruver, a student at Louisiana State University was taken to the hospital because of a “medical emergency” and was later pronounced dead, possibly a result of public hazing. Although his cause of death is unclear, accusations point towards members of the Phi Delta Theta organization. F. King Alexander, the university’s president stated”until the investigations are over all fraternity and sorority activities are suspended indefinitely”. The national office of Phi Delta Theta also announced that the university’s chapter is suspended and there working closely with the authorities in Louisiana so solve the case. The Article ends with chief executive of the fraternity Bob Briggs stating ”the chapter and any individuals who are found to have violated our policies will be held accountable”. I feel like hazing is a form of bullying. The same dynamics are used in both instances accept hazing is used to accept someone or a group of people when bullying is trying to single out a person or group from the rest of the population. Even Though most colleges are against hazing and consequences can lead up to expulsion, it still happens very often. Mostly behind closed doors. It's not only up to the faculty and staff but up to us as students and peers to help put a stop to hazing and bullying. If you see something, say something. Kids are losing their lives because they feel as if they lost their dignity. We need to stand up and  fight for our generation and our kids generation so in the future unnecessary deaths like this wouldn't happen.
